Department of the History of Social Thought
The Department of the History of Social Thought groups together staff from the Faculty of Sociology who are interested in past social and political philosophy as well as contemporary sociological theory. The scope of research in the latter field includes sociology and philosophy of culture, figurative sociology, Marxism, post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, and French sociology. The Department’s staff are mainly united by their interest in contemporary capitalism and the symbolic order that legitimises it, analysed from the perspective of social science itself, along with law, and the concepts of ideology, utopia and emotion. The Department’s staff teach classes in classical sociological theory, introduction to sociology and cultural theory, as well as conducts masters seminars. Current achievements of Department staff are presented via a monthly seminar held jointly with the staff of the Department of the History of Ideas and Cultural Anthropology of the Institute of Applied Social Sciences.
